Audience retention

Audience retention shows how many viewers are still watching at each moment of a video, usually as a graph from the first second to the last.

Where do you find it?

YouTube Studio, TikTok analytics and Instagram insights each show a retention view for individual videos. YouTube also shows average percentage viewed; TikTok shows average watch time and the share of viewers who watched the full video.

How do you read the graph?

Look for the steep drops and match them to what is on screen at that moment:

  • A drop in the first 2 to 3 seconds: the hook did not land.
  • A slow slide through the middle: the video is too long for what it says. Cut.
  • A sudden drop mid-video: a slow shot, a long pause or an off-topic line.
  • A bump near the end: people rewatched, often a sign of a satisfying payoff.
